One of the International Iron Metallics Association’s (IIMA) primary concerns is the safe handling and transportation of ore-based metallics – hot briquetted iron (HBI), direct reduced iron (DRI) and pig iron.
IIMA is a global industry association whose members account for more than 80% of production and international trade in ore-based metallics (pig iron, hot briquetted iron, direct reduced iron, granulated pig iron).
The guide has been updated and compliments the schedule for HBI (designated as DRI (A) Briquettes, hot-molded) under the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes Code (IMSBC Code), the International Maritime Organisation’s convention for maritime shipment of solid bulk cargoes
HBI and DRI are classed as Group B cargoes. Group B cargoes are solid bulk cargoes that may possess a chemical hazard during transport because of their chemical nature or properties. IIMA has Non-Governmental Organisation consultative status at the IMO. The IMSBC Code schedule for HBI deals with the precautions to be taken during loading, shipment, and unloading of HBI cargoes. Many millions of tonnes of HBI have been safely shipped under this schedule.
