SSAB and Metal Solutions have entered a long-term partnership for the supply of decarbonized steel with virtually zero fossil carbon emissions. This formal collaboration builds on a longstanding successful partnership with Metal Solutions and represents a shared vision for innovation, responsibility, and sustainable transformation across the traditional metal roofing and cladding sector.
Metal Solutions are the UK’s premier supplier and fabricator of all traditional metal roofing materials, systems and components to the roofing and cladding industry. Metal Solutions continues to demonstrate their commitment to providing low-carbon solutions made possible through SSAB's innovative fossil-free technology. This strategic collaboration is expected to play a vital role in helping the roofing and cladding industry reduce its environmental impact.
GreenCoat® colour coated steel from SSAB is already among Metal Solution’s most popular material choices for metal roofing and cladding. For Metal Solutions this versatile, uncompromising product formed the beginnings of a wider strategy - moving on through low emission recycled steel and eventually on towards a fully fossil-free steel future.
"Collaboration, sustainability and innovation are part of our core values, these values are not optional, they're essential. This partnership allows us to break difficult boundaries and grow stronger together, offering our customers materials that support a greener and more responsible future." says John Flood, Director, Metal Solutions Ltd.
“We are happy to add fossil-free steel to our collaboration with Metal Solutions, which already uses our GreenCoat® colour coated steel, containing rapeseed oil in the coating. By cutting our own carbon emissions, we can help our customers reduce their indirect emissions from the materials they use – it’s a win-win,” says Dave Williams, Managing Director, SSAB Swedish Steel Ltd.
Traditional steel production represents a significant source of global CO2 emissions, with both virgin and recycled steel production contributing to emissions. By changing the way steel is produced, SSAB wants to cut emissions and create a fossil-free value chain with customers and partners regardless of whether the raw material is scrap or iron ore.
In 2021, SSAB produced the world’s first fossil-free steel as a proof of concept using HYBRIT® technology. The revolutionary steelmaking technology using hydrogen reduced sponge iron, removes the primary source of CO2 emissions with water as by-product, instead of CO2. Since then, a number of pilot deliveries have been made to customers in different industries. When available in commercial volumes, the fossil carbon emissions in SSAB’s production of SSAB Fossil-free™ steel are targeted to be less than 0.05 kg CO2e/kg steel in Scope 1, 2 and for iron ore upstream Scope 3, of the GHG Protocol.
