The Canadian Port of Trois-Rivières is delighted to have received major funding of $87.1 million from Transport Canada as part of National Trade Corridors Fund for the Terminal 16 and 17 project. This investment will make it possible to refurbish Pier 17, build a new Pier 16 and develop adjacent terminals, in addition to consolidating and enhancing the activities of two Port users, Alcoa and G3 Canada. Total investment will amount to $312 million.
As part of the 17 Canadian Port Authorities and active since 1882, the Port of Trois-Rivières offers a wide range of facilities and services to the maritime industry throughout the year. The Port is an important player in regional, national and international economic development for major industrial sectors such as the aluminium industry, forestry and agrifood.
This project will support the aluminum and agri-food industries, which are key sectors of the Quebec and Canadian economies. It also represents a unique opportunity to make improvements to the Port's road and rail networks, and to introduce new technologies that will reduce waiting times for the various modes of transport, thus contributing to the efficiency of the supply chain.
The funding announcement was made today by the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry and Member of Parliament for Saint-Maurice -Champlain.
The Port of Trois-Rivières will build the new wharves and terminals in collaboration with its partners, Alcoa and G3 Canada, who will install new loading and unloading equipment with improved energy, environmental and operational performance. The project also includes the redevelopment of traffic lanes to improve the flow of traffic to and from the Port.
It should also be noted that Quebec-based Pomerleau won the call for tenders issued to contractors earlier this year. Work has begun and will continue until December 2026, when both terminals will be fully operational.
“I would like to thank the Government of Canada and our partners Alcoa and G3 for their confidence in the future of the Port of Trois-Rivières. This project will enable us to carry out a major modernization of our facilities. In addition to providing new wharves, the infilling of the basin will add over 17,000m of back dock space to be used for storage. This promising project is in line with our On Course for 2030 development plan, in which we aim to be an innovative and sustainable urban port that generates growth, at the heart of a competitive logistics chain,” emphasized Gaétan Boivin, President and CEO of the Port of Trois-Rivières.
Partners Alcoa and G3 Canada will install new all-electric, enclosed loading and unloading equipment, enabling significant environmental and productivity gains. What's more, the new piers will provide the basic infrastructure needed to subsequently install connections for the electrical connection of vessels at berth.
“Alcoa is proud to participate in this major project at the Port of Trois-Rivières. This strategic investment will optimize the delivery of our raw materials, improve our operational performance and reduce our environmental footprint thanks to state-of-the-art technology. Present in the region for over 30 years, Alcoa actively contributes to Quebec's economic development and supports 490 quality jobs at the Deschambault aluminium smelter. This project demonstrates our long-term commitment to the region and our determination to remain a leader in the aluminium industry. I would like to thank the government and the Port Authority for their collaboration, which is essential to the success of this initiative,” stated Gaby Poirier, President of Alcoa Canada and Regional Vice-President, North American Operations and Global Transformation.
