Netherlands Parliamentary rules out Maasvlakte II as location for new nuclear power plants

Netherlands Parliamentary rules out Maasvlakte II as location for new nuclear power plants

(Posted on 29/06/26)

A parliamentary letter in the Netherlands on the selection of a site for the construction of two new nuclear power plants states that Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam will no longer be considered as a potential location for the construction project. The west side of Prinses Alexiahaven was one of the seven candidate locations that underwent further assessment regarding the environmental impact and effects on the surrounding area. This option will no longer be included in the process of selecting a preferred location.

As the largest dry bulk port in Europe, the port of Rotterdam has all the facilities required for the storage and transhipment of dry bulk cargo.

Several reasons have led to its exclusion. These relate to ground conditions, nitrogen constraints, the availability of cooling water and Natura 2000 requirements. In addition, it has been concluded that installing two nuclear plants at Maasvlakte II will be complex from an energy-system perspective, owing to the considerable costs required to accommodate them within the electricity grid.

The site is also considered unsuitable for nuclear power plants in the longer term due to the many developments planned for Maasvlakte II. These include the Offshore Wind Grid Connections Programme (VAWOZ) and the potential seaward expansion of Maasvlakte II, which is currently being investigated.

In its response to the proposed location in the Memorandum on Scope and Level of Detail, the Port of Rotterdam Authority had already indicated that nuclear power plants would be undesirable at this location, given the impact that a lengthy construction phase would have on the surrounding area. The Port of Rotterdam Authority will study the government’s letter in more detail.
