Associated British Ports (ABP) has become the first port operator to purchase The Scarlett Box, a pioneering menstrual health solution designed specifically for maritime environments. The Port of Southampton will be the first port in ABP’s portfolio to roll out The Scarlett Box, an emergency menstrual care kit.
Earlier this year, ABP rolled out a group-wide initiative to ensure sanitary products are available across all its landside facilities, including offices and quay-side locations. Recognising the unique challenges faced by women on vessels, ABP is now extending the roll out to crew members working in marine environments where access to essential products can be limited.
Scarlett Barnett-Smith, a Deck Officer with nearly a decade of maritime experience, launched The Scarlett Box at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s (MCA) event at London International Shipping Week 2025. Scarlett introduced her innovative product – a compact, hygienic and fully equipped emergency menstrual care kit designed for women working in the maritime industry.
The Scarlett Box is water-resistant and contains essential products in sealed packaging to ensure safety and hygiene at sea. It addresses a critical gap in crew welfare and inclusivity within the industry, and at present, there is no product like this on the market.
Tim Morris, Group Head of Corporate Communications at ABP said: “We are proud that ABP and Southampton is leading the way in introducing The Scarlett Box. Empowering women in maritime is important for the future of our industry, and practical solutions like this make a real difference. This initiative reflects ABP’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive, and we hope it encourages others across the sector to follow suit.”
Scarlett Barnett-Smith, Founder of The Scarlett Box Ltd, commented: “My passion for maritime is at the heart of this business. When I introduced the prototype at London International Shipping Week, the product gained huge interest from large shipping groups, port operators and product providers, all ready to make orders.
“I am delighted that ABP, as the UK’s largest port operator, is leading the way as the first port operator to officially introduce The Scarlett Box. With the goal to change the industry for the better – one Scarlett Box at a time – this product ensures dignity, safety and preparedness for women at sea, and I’m thrilled to see ABP championing the change.”
