More than 2,000 Indian maritime cadets, ratings and trainees have benefited from a pioneering partnership between Sailors’ Society and the ITF Seafarers’ Trust.
The Wellness at Sea training, which supplements and enhances the existing curriculum, aims to equip cadets, ratings and trainees with essential knowledge around mental health, stress management and resilience building.
The bespoke programme is part of Sailors’ Society’s Circle of Care, which combines training and ongoing 24/7 support for cadets and seafarers across the globe.
Former General Secretary of the Maritime Union of India, Capt.Tushar Pradhan, said: "Sailors' Society's Wellness at Sea programme, supported by the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), has made a profound impact on the overall wellbeing of seafarers globally.
“By addressing the physical, mental, emotional, and social aspects of life at sea, the programme has helped foster healthier, more resilient maritime professionals. Its holistic approach to wellness promotes not only personal health but also safer and more effective shipboard operations. With ITF’s continued backing, the initiative strengthens the global maritime workforce, supporting budding seafarers to perform at their best and lead balanced lives - both on board and when returning home to their families and communities."
Sailors’ Society CEO, Sara Baade, added: “We have been delighted to form this ground-breaking partnership with ITF Seafarers’ Trust and thank them for their continued support into a second year. This ensures the future of maritime in India is prepared for the unique challenges of life at sea.
“Many of those taking part said the training not only increased their awareness but also empowered them with practical strategies to enhance overall wellbeing on board for the whole crew.
“The success of this programme and its continued implementation underscore our belief that ongoing mental health education is vital in developing a healthier, more resilient workforce.”
Cadets, ratings and trainees from 12 maritime colleges and institutions have already taken part in the training, which includes practical sessions and real-life case studies. The ITF Seafarers’ Trust has funded this in-depth wellness training throughout 2024, and now additional funding will continue this throughout 2025.
