GeelongPort in Australia has joined forces with The Mission to Seafarers Geelong to raise awareness of the impact smoking has on seafarer’s health and wellbeing.
Tabacco kills more than 7 million people each year. More than 6 million of those deaths are caused by direct tobacco use, while around 890,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.
Tabacco smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals, including 250 that are toxic with more than 50 of those known to cause cancer.
GeelongPort HSE Advisor, Dr Lisa Mills said, “We are committed to the provision and maintenance of a safe working environment to ensure the health and safety of everyone who interacts with our business. This smoke-free campaign aligns directly to improving the health and wellbeing of seafarers and we are proud to be a part of it. ”
The ongoing campaign is a welfare project of the Mission to Seafearer’s Geelong. The movement will provide educational and awareness materials to seafarers, including support and connections to services to assist with quitting the habit.
As the second largest port in Victoria, GeelongPort handles more than 10.5 million tonnes of product annually across a broad range of industry segments, including crude oil, wood-chip, fertiliser and break bulk cargo.
