IBJ has been honoured to attend the 75th anniversary celebration of Morska Agencja Gdynia (MAG), which took place at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Sopot, Poland on 26th March
Based in Gdynia, MAG was founded in 1951 to represent foreign shipping lines, shipowners and insurance clubs (P&I), as well as to provide ship agency services in all Polish seaports. Over time, specialisation has been expanded and the company is now a leading player in Poland’s maritime sector with a wide scope of services and expertise.
The 75th anniversary event was a spectacular gala attended by 300 guests from shipping, cargo handling and logistics in Poland and worldwide. IBJ was the only international publication represented at the glittering event, which was organised to the highest standards of production, presentation, catering and entertainment.
MAG acts as both ships agent and forwarding agent for principals operating in Poland’s port’s and terminals within a wide range of bulk and other cargoes. Commodities handled include agricultural products, coal, coke, limestone, biomass, aggregates, cement, fertilizers, wheat pellets, chemical products, scrap, wood products and others.
The past year , MAG;s 75th, has seen bright spots in commodities such as Imported coking coal for the steel industry, domestic coal from Kazakhstan, wood products, paper and growing heavy lift and project cargo.
The number of ships handled in 2024 reached 1338 from coasters to Panamax and Cape sized vessels. This makes MAG is the number one ship agency in Polish ports. Dry bulk cargo amounted to around 32 % of the total of the agency’s vessels handled. The total volume of bulk cargo was about 2,2 million tons.
Mag invests heavily in infrastructure, which differentiates them from competitors who offer only a service. For example, the company invested in North Port, Gdansk, in a 30 year agreement presenting many possibilities and opportunities in bulk cargo. There has also been recent investment in software to automate operations and increase efficiency, along with warehousing and logistic services to create a proper structure for handling bulk.
The scope of MAG’s activities includes:
• Ships agency - detailed description of the tasks performed by MAG as a ship agent above.
• Chartering
• Logistics services - forwarding and sea, land, rail and air transport
• Warehousing – a new storage yard with an area of nearly five hectares is located near the largest coal import terminal in Gdansk, under construction
• Port operations at MAG’s own terminal in Dar?owo port
• Inspection and quality control.
MAG is a member of BIMCO and the Association of Ship Agents and Brokers in Gdynia.
