Work rounded off on safe berths

(Posted on 04/10/18)

The five new fixed berths for barges along the Maas end of Isle of Brienenoord are ‘good to go’ say the Port of Rotterdam. The project, a Port of Rotterdam Authority initiative realised by the Werkendam firm De Klerk, was officially accepted by the client on Monday, 1st October 2018.

While the site had already served as an anchorage for barges for a number of years, the construction of new berths has significantly improved safety conditions along this stretch of the river. The berths were designed and realised in close consultation with the various barge operators.

Each berth provides room for five barges. The berths in the middle are for barges ranging between 76.5 and 90 metres, while the two outermost berths are for barges between 90 and 110 metres. There is at least 110 metres of open space between the individual berths.
